Sussex Railway Stations on old Picture Postcards
In the early years of the 20th century, Britain's railways reached their zenith as did postcard printing and collecting. Many photographers recorded scenes in their locality and the railway station, a source of local pride, was often included.
James Young, a Bluebell Railway volunteer, has compiled a selection from the Paul Laming collection depicting Sussex stations. The postcards he has chosen are delightfully varied as they show not only stations and trains but all the paraphernalia associated with railways.
There are horse drawn carriages, veteran motor cars (although they weren't then), level crossings, a panoramic view of Three Bridges, an unexpectedly bucolic Lancing, floods, signalboxes and a view of Sheffield Park around 1913.
