Southern DEMUs
The diesel electric multiple unit made its debut on the Southern in 1957 with the introduction of the distinctive straight-sided Hastings line stock. Other units quickly followed, to a slightly different design, operating in Hampshire and Sussex. They have now been superseded by more modern units but the "thumpers" are now fondly recalled except perhaps by those who rode next to the engine!
