Pullman Profile No. 1: The 12-Wheel Cars
Antony M. Ford, the author of this impressively detailed book, is archivist of the Pullman Society and so has access to specialised documentation and photographs.
The six-wheel bogies, it is said, gave an impressively smooth ride and, in the days of jointed track, would produce a different rhythm. The carriages described in this landscape format book were introduced between 1908 and 1923 and ran on the Southern and the LNER, in some cases until the 1960s.
The illustrations embrace many of the lavish interiors, carriages under construction and a colour section which includes a selection of the characteristic table lamps, tickets and menus.
