Mallard and the A4 Class on BlueBell Railway Shop

Mallard and the A4 Class

Ask people to name a famous railway engine and the names they are most likely to come up with are Rocket, Flying Scotsman and Mallard. Mallard's exploits on the East Coast main line on July 3rd 1938 have accorded this member of Sir Nigel Gresley's A4 class iconic status.

Enthusiasts will argue endlessly about which class of locomotive was the greatest but the A4s are generally considered to be a superb and, for their time, revolutionary engine. Known to linesiders as 'streaks' Mallard and its companions were kings of the LNER and this book records their history from the heady days of the Silver Jubilee express to their final fling in Scotland.
