On 9th July 1967, Merchant Navy Pacific No. 35030 Elder Dempster Lines left Weymouth with the 2.07 p.m. express to Waterloo. This was the final ordinary passenger working on the Southern Region of British Railways, ending a tradition that began 120 years previously.

In this collection of colour photographs, Michael Welch shows how steam locomotives ended their days in the south, often dirty and in barely acceptable mechanical condition. And not just the end of the machines - it was also the end of a way of life and a way of working that is now maintained on preserved railways around Great Britain.
